Button Contest

Categories: Services

Hello fellow CSers,

We think it would be cool to create a button that would identify us as members of the Department of Computer Science and we want your creativity to come up with the design. What does Computer Science mean to you? We hope that the design is unique and would incorporate some aspect that would make sense in terms of technology, computer science, etc.

Submit your designs to nakisa AT cs DOT ubc DOT ca. It should include 'UBC Computer Science' or 'CS' somewhere on it, have no more than four colours, and be simple enough that the design is still visible when shrunken down to one inch.

Submit it by Thursday July 28th. Students will have the until August 11th to vote on their favourite design and the winning design may show up in places like on CS clothing, the agenda, the yearbook, etc. - so it better be good! Create a legend for yourself and prove that not only do CS students have brilliant logical minds, they are creative too!

Just for entering a design you will get one free 'beverage' at our first bzzr garden, which will be early in the school year. The winner will receive a $150 gift certificate to UBC bookstore.

Thanks and we hope everyone's having an awesome summer!

ChicTech Volunteers

Categories: Career

The FoWCS Committee and the Jade Project are sponsoring a new program for high school girls called ChicTech. Teams of four girls and one teacher from area high schools will create web sites for non-profit organizations, and all of their projects will be judged in a competition at UBC at the end of the year. More information about the project is available at http://www.chictech.ca

Who We Need:

  • Mentors: Teams of two UBC students (one male, one female) will mentor one team each in the spring to encourage and help them with their projects. Requires only ONE in-person visit to the team; thereafter you can communicate with them via phone and/or email.
  • Speakers: During the month of November, we need volunteers to visit IT or CAPP classes in area high schools (Vancouver, Richmond, North & West Van) and talk a little about ChicTech for ~10 minutes. We will provide a script and arrange for a public speaking training session. You can do as few or as many schools as you like. If you are an alum we can arrange for you to visit your old high school.

If you’d like to help us out with either of these roles, please reply to ChicTechUBC(at)gmail.com with the role name (Mentor, Speaker) in the subject line.

Clothing, food, and new office manager

Categories: Services

Edit: For detailed clothing info, please see http://www.csss.cs.ubc.ca/clothing2005

Edit: Deadline has been extended to November 14th. (This is the last time, ;-) )

Clothing samples have now arrived in X139. So make sure you have the right size for your order, which is due Friday (not anymore, see the edit below). If you've submitted an order form already and want to double check (since they only arrived today), just come down and we can make changes if necessary. You can find more about our clothing sale at http://www.csss.cs.ubc.ca/node/126

Available colours:

Also, since the samples only arrived a few days ago, we have graciously extended the deadline for T-shirt orders to November 4th, 2005 at 2pm. Please submit them ASAP, as the sooner we get the orders in to our supplier, the sooner they will arrive!

We haven't really done an official announcement on this, but we now sell pop and chips for the low, low price of 50 cents. The initial reaction has been overwhelming and we're in talks with year representatives to arrange regular shipments of goodies to the Cube office.

The extra responsibilities that the CSSS has taken on this year, has made us realize that another executive position is merited. Thus, the grandiose title of "CSSS Office Manager" has now been bestowed upon Eugene Chan. Even since being sworn into office last week in a rather unofficial ceremony, he will be coordinating office affairs (that means more office hours for the CSSS) and is not above playing a few games of NHL 2003 every now and then on our ever-popular Xbox console.
