Want to see what’s up and coming in Canada’s IT industry? The Canadian Undergraduate Technology Conference provides students with an opportunity to interact with the brightest student minds from around Canada, as well as representatives from North America’s leading IT companies! Companies such as Bell, Cognos, General Electric, IBM, and Microsoft – to name a few – participated in last year’s conference.

CUTC 2006 will be held sometime in late January. Students are responsible for paying for their own round-trip airfare (although CSSS may be offering some type of subsidy to help offset this cost). The Conference provides students with a greatly reduced hotel rate (the rate last year for staying at the Delta Conference Resort was $32/night!). There is a registration fee to attend the event, but if enough students from BC register the registration fees will be waived.

Finalized details about this year’s Conference have not yet been made available. You can check out the CUTC website at http://www.cutc.ca/ - but please note that it is still under construction.

The Computer Science Student Society is willing to coordinate all arrangements for attending this year’s CUTC. Please email [email protected] if you’re interested in attending, or if you have any questions. In 2004, 15 students from UBC attended CUTC and had a blast - let’s do the same thing this year :)

We’ve just received word that UBC is one of the invited institutions in Electronic Arts’ first ever programming competition, Tank Wars. This is an AI programming competition, similar to Project Hoshimi, where students are given an API to use, to create intelligent bots that wage war!

EA looks to have outdone itself by including a code base, that compiles on Windows (.NET), Linux, and Mac (Xcode)! So, unlike other programming competitions, there’s a great amount of freedom in whatever development environment you prefer. The contest runs through January 15th, 2006, so this sounds like an excellent activity to pass time away during the holiday season, if you’re raring to scratch that programing itch. And not to mention, it’s exclusive to you guys (and a few other Canadian institutions), so I’d say there’s a decent chance of winning. But you’ll have to get past me first :P (which shouldn’t be too hard). Let’s aim for more than 4 entries, eh?

And although it doesn’t specify it explicitly, if you’re looking to get the attention of EA for whatever reason - co-op student or summer intern - this might be a way of getting your foot in the door :-)

One of the best kept secrets in the CS department is the weekly Eccentric Loup Munches. There, young (and old) minds ponder the great questions and issues surrounding computing science and offer great insight over lunch and a snack.

Organized by Steve Wolfman, this event has lasted through the summer and is now scheduled to continue onwards through the fall. As this is a weekly thing, we won’t list all the topics that will be covered, however, you can check out their official website and scour the newsgroups (ubc.cs.undergrad (editor’s note: now closed)) for more information.

The latest post as of this writing is here (editor’s note: now closed). So stay up to date and come out! It would be a shame if someone solved the P vs NP Problem at a weekly munch and you weren’t there to witness it! :p

Disappointed you didn’t win a video game in the last contest we had? Electronic Arts is hosting a studio night, just for UBC students. Come and visit the EA campus, hear guest speakers, win cool prizes. Free food and beverages provided!

Also, Grace Lo, formerly of UBC, will be there to share her experiences working for EA as a guest speaker. You should bring your resume and transcript if you’re interested in being a potential candidate to work for EA.

One interesting note is that transportation is provided (presumably from UBC to Burnaby) however you must contact UBC Career Services to reserve. More on this as information becomes available to us.

EDIT: Late breaking news! We tried our best :-)

Pick-up from UBC at 5:15pm and drop off at EAC (4330 Sanderson Way). The bus will be waiting at the UBC passenger drop off-pick/up loop just outside SUB on the North Side. The bus would enter through Gate 2 which goes to the loop and then back out Gate 2 again.

It is a white “limo” style bus. It should have a sign in the front window stating it is for EA.

Return transportation is your own responsibility. The best way to get back to UBC from EA is to catch the 25 UBC westbound at the corner of Sanderson Way and Gilmore Way (right outside EA) and follow it to UBC Bus Loop. Buses arrive every 15 minutes… See http://www.translink.bc.ca

Well, that’s all folks, for term 1 at least!

Donut sales, LAN parties, BBQ’s, tons of info sessions. We’d like to hear from you what went “right” for you and what you think we needed improvement on. Or suggestions on what you would like to see us do. Seriously, the sky’s the limit here, and we promise to consider anything you bring up. There’s still another whole term to go, and so much more in store for you guys, so please let us know in the Forums.

I think this was a really successful term for us, and we certainly hope we made a difference in your routine. Whether it was dropping by for a quick snack of ever-healthy potato chips and pop, or burning hours in front of our popular Xbox, or just socializing at one of our many events, it was all good :-)

So, now’s the time to hit the books (in case you haven’t done so already), and blast through 3 weeks of exams. Study smarter, not harder and may the force be with you… always.
